Now has clear views, but its a short messy walk
Short Summary created by hibby, simon3, mickhanney, march-fixer, Harry Goodman  16 Mar 2025
Park at T0854386765 starA on the Military Road. Follow the track uphill SW (signed for the Wicklow Way) for some 900m and then to the top. The forestry, previously on the left, is now completely gone. And much of the forestry on the right of the track is gone too (giving a view to the military road). At the high point of the trail (WW) at T07862 86105 starB, before you descend to Mucklagh, veer left off the track. There isn't an obvious trail to follow. Progress is slow as there is lots of strewn branches in the way. The highpoint is easily reached by following the rising ground. The top has a few small stones gathered together. You can't really miss it as its such a small hill. This high point now has clear unimpeded views of the surrounding hills. The view is the only thing to recommend it, hoping people get a fine day to see that landscape. Return the way you came. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/439/comment/5198/

Picture: The "Adirondack-style" mountain shelter at Mucklagh on the Wicklow Way
Mountain hut

The walk along the Wicklow Way from T08543 86765 starA is very agreeable, sloping gently upwards on a well-made forest track with some amazing views across the valley towards Slieve Maan and the Lugnaquilla massif. After about 900 metres we arrived at the point suggested for leaving the track and striking out for the summit at T07862 86105 starB. This is the high point mentioned in the summary, just before the track starts to slope steeply down.

From there to the summit is 150m across an area of cleared forest, which was not nearly as difficult as I had expected. The only difficulty was where the leftover branches had been piled up into rows that are a bit tricky to climb over, but can in some cases be circumvented. We probably encountered and crossed about 4 such ridges between the track and the summit; the rest of the route was fine.

The summit is marked by a rock pile to which we each added a small rock before taking the usual summit photos. The 360-degree views of the surrounding and distant mountains are just incredible, beyond the power of words to describe. Distance from car to summit about 1.2 km, 100 m ascent, less than 30 minutes.

After returning to the track, we continued along the Wicklow Way for another 500 metres to the Mucklagh Hut, an "Adirondack-style" hut that can be used by walkers for shelter and overnight stays (no facilities - bring your own sleeping bag!). The visitors book is entertaining to read. Some kind people have left rice, coffee, and even medication for the next visitors.

On a less happy note, we saw that someone had dumped a mattress and bed base on the side of the road on the way up. Terrible desecration of such a wild and beautiful place. So we were reminded of both sides of humanity. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/439/comment/24404/

From the Glenmalure to Aughavannagh road follow the Wicklow Way until you see a sign "Road Closed" and a large boulder lies across the path, to stop vehicles going any further. You are within a hundred metres of the top at this stage. Turn back and approx 30 paces from the boulder, you will see a cutting in the forest on your right - upper side. Follow this until you reach the highest point, then turn right into the trees, which are not as hard to travel through as they appear. Keep following the higher ground and shortly you will arrive at a small plateau, which is clear of trees and a short distance away is the summit cairn.

An alternative route down (can also be used to ascend) may be found by retracing your path to the Wicklow Way and crossing it to pick up the cutting on the other side of the path - not immediately visible due to a number of low branches, but these are at the entrance only. Once you pass through these you have a straight pass that leads directly down to the Aughavannagh road, along the right hand edge of the current felling line. It's possible to reduce the unpleasant pushing through Sitka to 10 metres or less if you approach the summit from the forest track to the east (marked on the Healy map), then do a semi-circle around to the west and north of the summit, before pushing through the last little bit to the clearing. Fantastic views of Lugnaquilla, Slievemaan, and Corrigasleggaun from the vicinity of the summit - a hidden gem! Photo shows the view across to Lug from just west of the summit. Parking at T083 853 starC and simply following the Wicklow Way to point T077 860 starD, you are within 60-70 metres of the top. Unfortunately that's the hard bit as the remaining climb is through dense, relatively young conifers with lots of low, pointy branches. Bring a machete, a fly swatter and some plasters. Carrickshane as it was
by simon3  25 Feb 2022
Somewhat out of date due to felling. Carrickashane's summit is set in a small clearing in the midst of some vigorously growing Sitka Spruce. I'd like to tell you that there is an easy way to this clearing, but no there isn't. At least the last hundred metres are an unpleasant push through young trees -- bring your jacket and over-trousers! Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/439/comment/437/
