The Ordnance Survey Name Book gives Leitir Cos as the derivation of this name, which it interprets as 'spewy hillside of the foot'. Leitir Cos appears to be an error for Leitir Cois.   Knocklettercuss is the second highest hill in the North Mayo area and the 1020th highest in Ireland.

Ascend via the spur

As mentioned by gerrym, the Bangor Erris trail gives easy access to Knocklettercuss. My plan was to follow the trail for a few kilometres before ascending directly to the summit and then return down the spur to add a bit of variety to this out and back loop. As the trail was more like a stream, after about 1.5km and one squelch too many I headed up to the spur and finished my approach to the summit on drier ground. Fantastic views from a 370 metre mountain. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/878/comment/24429/
