The first element may alternatively be Ir. tom, 'bush' or 'knoll'. Ir. aonach means 'a fair or assembly'. It is therefore curious that the mountain NW of Tomaneena is called Fair Mountain in English. Its Irish name is An Chaor. The valley below Fair Mountain is named Glenceera according to Price [PNCW]. Tomaneena is also known as Turlough Hill.   Tomaneena is the 137th highest place in Ireland.

An easy to follow route up suits beginners
Short Summary created by csd  5 Aug 2019
The easiest route to Toomaneena is from the Wicklow Gap. There are two car parks there with ample space. Follow the access route for Turlough Hill's upper lake, which starts at O 07471 00118 A at the westerly car park. Follow to the t-junction at the top and take the rough track to the right (SW). The actual summit is about 60 metres SW from the path that skirts the quarry cliff. Be careful of the cliff edge in poor visibility as the fence guarding it isn't in the best of condition. Irish mountain forestry is often criticised for destroying scenery by being planted in boring straight lines. The ridge between Turlough Hill (Tomaneena) and Fair Hill sports this astonishing, almost comical, alternative. Does anyone have any idea why it was planted like this? Remember this is commercial forestry at 500 to 550 m elevation. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/136/comment/563/

Turlough Hill from a different perspective

An interesting view of Tomaneena and its power station I thought, which was found on the spirt of ireland website www.spirtofireland.org

The website itself is well worth a read - if these proposed plans do go ahead they very well may change the landscape of the west coast in years to come.... Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/136/comment/4671/

Nothing to see here!

Took a walk up the access road having bagged Tonelagee earlier in the day. Turlough Hill is a pretty uninspiring mountain with no real distinct top. The ground behind the reservoir is littered with rocks from the nearby quarry - indeed the whole summit plateau is akin to an abandoned building site. Not a thing of beauty but it does give a great view back across the bulk of Tonelagee. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/136/comment/6124/
