Obviously mainly used as a means of getting the heart pumping at the start of a long circuit, Carrigvore today offered me the opportunity of breaking in a pair of new boots prior to a weekend's walking. Had some time to pass prior to a meeting in the area so took a stroll up the hill from Sally Gap. After a short initial walk through heather, a track is quickly picked up which leads to a widening ditch nearer to the top. On approaching the top, I was greeted by a number of deer grazing on the summit who must have been dazzled by the shine off the new boots as they quickly moved on. As stated elsewhere, thesummit has an interesting rock formation and a pool and offers excellent views across the range. 20 odd minutes up and 10-15 back - a smashin' way to clear the head (and the boots feel great!) A nasty little hill
by madeleineblue  5 Mar 2014
What a pity I didn't read the previous comments carefully before blithely setting off up what looked like a pimple of a hill from a layby below the summit, one sunny day in December....I found an old track which made my ascent very easy. However, my propensity for heading straight for the target, regardless of experience, meant that my descent was rather more exciting than planned. Yes, it's a small hill, and approached with caution, it is a lovely short easy walk for a fine day. However, unless you're a climber, choose your place of descent carefully, preferably by the same route ascended, or you will find yourself either scrambling down a very steep incline or, as has been mentioned previously, dodging large holes cleverly hidden for the less wary. Poor Cleo didn't realise the pool was quite so deep until she fell in trying to get a drink. I'm sure it was a welcome cool-off after the climb in the sun! Next stop on the traditional Sally Gap to Wicklow Gap traverse is Gravale. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/133/comment/391/
