A very rough little hill
by IainT  31 Dec 2016
I used to take groups up this in the early 1990s, mainly to visit the Mass Rock on the SW shoulder. It's easy to find as it's pretty much the only horizontal rock on the whole hill. We used to go up the forest edge from the Kerry Way, which was pretty rough, but then so is everywhere else, a maze of rock slabs, gorse and tussocks, an extremely rough place. Above the Mass Rock is a prominent tall cairn, the Sentry, where a lookout was stationed during services, then higher up are numerous minor tops. The name is from Cnoc an Amadaun, "hill of fools", supposedly either from people being confused by the many tops or from redcoats firing at the cairn thinking it was a person. Maybe.
Incidentally, the hill to the east (764 679 starA), called Fiacaill locally although not named on any map I've seen, and not on any list, is a cracking little peak, easily climbed from the Kerry Way by the track on its SE flank. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/1191/comment/18753/

Nice ridge walk from North
by Fergalh  28 Jun 2021
I Climbed this from the north at the edge of the forest on the R568 at 726686 starB there is a stone track . Plenty of space to leave a car, first cross gate and follow the track for a short while than follow the narrow ridge that runs parallel to the forest fence. Eventually that will leave you on the main north south ridge 720680 starC. Follow the fence all the way from here. Two minor spot heights (269 & 261) are traversed along with one large cleft and some minor ups and downs before the final ascent of the main peak. Wonderful views from here. Ground conditions are okay not wonderful but not awful either Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/1191/comment/23184/
