Peter Walker on Glanbeg, 2008
by Peter Walker  16 Dec 2008
The final top on the Maughernane Circuit is Glanbeg, and it really is a matter of just a couple of minutes absence from the col before it. It's well worth that little diversion, both to look at the reasonably imposing ridge you've just descended, and to take one last proper look at the beautiful westward view. On returning to the col, the initial northward descent is rough but easy: not too steep. A track should be obvious below: this (I believe) is the track marked on the map that reaches the road at (585700 starA), so obviously it extends much further up the hill than denoted on sheet 83. I picked this up and followed it down to around the 200m contour, before cutting ENE in a noble (but doomed) attempt to find the other track marked which seemingly reached the road near where I'd left my car (597698 starB): what I actually found was a fascinating assault course of bog, incipient streams, deep drainage ditches and barbed wire fences (all of which I negotiated, but those following in my footsteps might wish to bear in mind that I'm 6'3 with 34" inside leg). I arrived back at the car just as 'very late afternoon' gave way to 'twilight'...and oh so glad I'd pulled my finger out and actually done something on my last day of this particular trip! Maughernane Circuit anti-clockwise

Maughernane Circuit. Starting as others at (585700 starA *A) going anticlockwise. A good farm / hill track goes almost up to the Col where it is a short walk to Glanbeg 484m OS. Great views from the top, well worth the effort. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/503/comment/17994/
