This hill is also known as Giltspur Mountain [PNCW], of which the Irish version Giolspar is a transliteration. The name Giltspur, which originally refers to a townland on the northern slopes, is explained by a transaction in the late 12th century, whereby Dermod MacGiollamocholmog granted one carucate of land in Kilruddery to Richard de Felda for a pair of gilt spurs, to be presented to him and his heirs each year at Michelmas [PNCW]. Giltspur Mountain is thus a rare example of an English language name which is so old that it has been replaced by another, Little Sugar Loaf.   Little Sugar Loaf is the 1071th highest place in Ireland.

Windy at the top
by hibby  13 Apr 2024
We approached this very familiar and much-loved summit from a new direction - we parked in the car park of Belmont Demesne and followed the marked walking route through the estate and out onto the common. Most of the walk is on good paths, with the last 100 metres or so being a fairly steep climb over uneven rocks (but firm underfoot with no loose scree, unlike the summit cone of its big brother across the valley).

At the summit and the approach, we were exposed to a very strong south-westerly wind. It was so strong that we were at risk of losing our footing. It was a useful reminder that even on the most familiar and friendliest of hills, weather conditions can make life difficult. Because of the wind, we didn't linger at the summit, but returned the way we came. Most of the route was sheltered from the wind, once we got back down to the path.

Breathtaking views in every direction - I highly recommend it. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/909/comment/24178/
