[RWD version 1 ]
A nice walk through Carrig wood and on to summit Sorrel Hill returning in a figure of 8 circuit using well defined tracks for virtually all of the way.
Start at the entrance to the wood at O00288 12340 where there is room for about three cars without blocking the passage of forest vehicles. It is also relatively safe parking here as it is off the beaten track.
Follow the forest track all the way to the eastern end of the wood and cross the stile onto open ground. Take the track NNE up onto the saddle and then switch E at the top to follow the track and low ditch to Sorrel Hill. There are wonderful views to be gained from along here. There is a nice steady climb along a defined track to the nice cairn at the summit.
We returned S and then E to contour or way back via a slightly different route. The ground is good and easy to cross. Continued past the edge of the forest towards Lugnagun Great where I looked for the old Megalithic Tomb just inside the boundary of the wood at O02164 11925. It has all been replanted around here and while previously Coilte avoided this patch, I am not sure if it has now been planted on? We did not search too much, so it could well be my lack of persistence!
Dropped down the rough fire-break track, crossing the track used earlier and returned via the lower track to the exit gate at the western extremity of the wood. Follow the tarmac road back to the wood entrance.
