Walking up Carriglineen is pretty much an easy climb, but well worth the little efford. The route from NE starting at the car park at the Shay Elliot Forest as provided in the comments before follows broad forest roads and an clear & short mountain path towards the summit. The top is rather flat and marked with a little cairn. Views from here include the lightly higher neighbour Kirikee Mountain in the E, the Cullentragh/Braigue Ridge and Mullacor in the N (with Scarr and Tonelagee in the back), the entry of the Glenmalure Valley in the SE with the high Wicklow peaks in the back and Fananierrin, Croaghanmoira and Ballinacor in the S. Who has done that horseshoe walk too might enjoy the views even more. We were lucky with the weather on this really hot summer day and not a trace of mist limited our views. On our way back down retracing our steps we met two dogs who were lost on the slopes. Due to the weather conditions they looked really exhausted and we walked them back to our car to bring them down to the valley. At the Lodge the pub's owner quickly found out whose dogs those two fellows where and within 10 minutes the happy owner and his dogs were reunited. Walkers continually refer to the high pass between Glendalough and Glenmalure as the
'Shea Elliott' because of the monument dedicated to the cyclist on the crest of the hill...
But ask any locals where the this monument stone is and they will tell you it is on...
The Three Crosses Pass,
a very old name, its origins lost in time and the Wicklow mists, for some time now a few of us have endeavored to have this old name brought back into common usage and for the first time ever it has appeared on a published map by EastWest Mapping.
