Carriglineen Mountain Hill Sliabh Charraig Linnín A name in Irish, also Carriglinneen an extra EastWest name in English (Ir. Sliabh Charraig Linnín [OSI], 'mountain of Carraig Linnín') Wicklow County in Leinster Province, in Carn List, Dark blue-grey slate, phyllite & schist Bedrock

Price suggests that Carriglineen may derive rather from Ir. Carraig Glinnín, 'rock of the little glen'.   Carriglineen Mountain is the 713th highest place in Ireland.

Fairly steep on three sides with good views.
Short Summary created by simon3  7 Jul 2013
Carriglineen is relatively steep on three sides, the exception being the NE spur. It provides attractive views to the end of the Glenmalure valley. For example it is possible to see the Faninierin-Croaghanmoira-Ballincor group as a whole.

One obvious place to start to reach it is from the Shay Healy memorial at around T1296 9223 starA (Point A). It is also possible from the SE using the road that starts at T 115 902 starB (Point B). (There is a sign requesting that visitors ring regarding entry, however the owner is happy at responsible walker access).

As of 2013 the forest to the NW is notoriously dense and not recommended. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/604/comment/5363/

Having completed Kirikee, I approached Carriglineen from the north as suggested by padodes. While not blessed with quite the same weather, the views up Glenmalur to the Fraughan Rock Glen, Table Mountain, and Corrigasleggaun are very nice indeed. While not quite a circuit, Kirikee and Carriglineen can be done together in under two hours; perfect for a quick summer's evening trot. Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/604/comment/2754/

When you cross the road from Shay Elliot Carpark and head through the gate and up the track you come to a crossroads of tracks. Left leads off to Kirikee. The right track leads in about 15 minutes to the summit of Carriglineen. The views are inferior to those from Kirikee in my opinion. However it is possible to watch the Military Road below which entertained me for some reason. I enjoyed picking out the Wicklow Way route on Mullacor and also where it heads towards Slieve Maan. padodes on Carriglineen Mountain, 2008
by padodes  23 Mar 2008
This, I think, is the first photo of Carriglineen on MountainViews. It was taken from the top of Fananierin, looking northwards across the Avonbeg River valley. It shows this small mountain from its most attractive side (Drumgoff nestling at its foot to the left), with its southern flank clearly bearing the marks of its glaciated past, when the ice issuing from Glenmalure ground its way eastwards. From a walker's perspective, it's a rather disappointing mountain, however. Surrounded on three sides by a combination of roads, forest, farmland and human habitation, it cannot easily be included in any meaningful circuit, although David Herman, in his walk guide 'East and South', does manage to link it up with Mullacor. The simplest and least adventurous approach is from the north side, starting close to the Shay Elliot Monument (T 130 921 starC). Heading south on a track between Carriglineen and Kirikee Mountain, after about 500 metres a trodden path appears to the right and takes one over gently rising ground to the top of Carriglineen. Easy climb and so much worth it!
by nesa1206  22 Jul 2013
Walking up Carriglineen is pretty much an easy climb, but well worth the little efford. The route from NE starting at the car park at the Shay Elliot Forest as provided in the comments before follows broad forest roads and an clear & short mountain path towards the summit. The top is rather flat and marked with a little cairn. Views from here include the lightly higher neighbour Kirikee Mountain in the E, the Cullentragh/Braigue Ridge and Mullacor in the N (with Scarr and Tonelagee in the back), the entry of the Glenmalure Valley in the SE with the high Wicklow peaks in the back and Fananierrin, Croaghanmoira and Ballinacor in the S. Who has done that horseshoe walk too might enjoy the views even more. We were lucky with the weather on this really hot summer day and not a trace of mist limited our views. On our way back down retracing our steps we met two dogs who were lost on the slopes. Due to the weather conditions they looked really exhausted and we walked them back to our car to bring them down to the valley. At the Lodge the pub's owner quickly found out whose dogs those two fellows where and within 10 minutes the happy owner and his dogs were reunited. Ate you lost on the Three Crosses Pass
by denis-gill  11 Aug 2013
Walkers continually refer to the high pass between Glendalough and Glenmalure as the
'Shea Elliott' because of the monument dedicated to the cyclist on the crest of the hill...
But ask any locals where the this monument stone is and they will tell you it is on...
The Three Crosses Pass,
a very old name, its origins lost in time and the Wicklow mists, for some time now a few of us have endeavored to have this old name brought back into common usage and for the first time ever it has appeared on a published map by EastWest Mapping.
