Picture: Copper Point Lighthouse

New Comment: No sign of the Great Gatsby
by Fergalh  15 Apr 2024
Just south of The village of Schull there is a pier at Colla. Parking there for around ten cars in smallish carpark and a ferry goes most days to Long Island for the princely sum of seven euros. The journey takes around ten minutes to get to the jetty which is a third of the way down the island. I turned east and walked by a number of houses including one very large one which i heard from locals is owned by an American but his name is not Gatsby. The track also passes by a final house on east side being renovated and the track leads to the unusual lighthouse at copper point.(there was originally some copper mined here and an abandoned mine shaft is in the area). Than i walked up past the jetty and up the highest point near the abandoned school. Close to this is where the permanent spring for the island is located at Cuas na Gualainne which has some colourful decorations. There is also a sign there dedicated to Jo Whooley's car !The island had 200 people at one stage, but now there are ten permanent inhabitants and a number of holiday homes. The other houses are scattered around the second jetty and the end of the island has some cliffs and great views. I headed back to the ferry and the short trip home but without any clue of who or where F Scott Fitzgerald was writing about maybe there is another Long island somewhere but not as nice as peaceful as this one for sure.
