Presumably the name is transferred from some nearby hollow to the mountain itself. Price has a useful note to this effect, but is unable to determine the hollow in question. There are three valleys in the vicinity: Fraughan Rock Glen to the north-east, the South Prison to the south-east and the North Prison to the north-west. The first two are both forested nowadays. The summit is marked as Percy's Table, named after a local landowner of the 18th century. Cf. Dawson's Table on Galtymore. P.W. Joyce gave the original form as Log na Coilleach, 'hollow of the (grouse) cocks'. However this seems doubtful. It does not show the urú which would be expected. Nor is the name connected with the deity Lug.   Lugnaquilla is the highest mountain in the Wicklow area and the 12th highest in Ireland. Lugnaquilla is the highest point in county Wicklow.

Picture: Most spectacular Trig point to date :D
brrrr that's a bit cold!
by LizzieMurray  1 Jan 2013
Happy New Year 2013! What an awesome day to conquer the mountain I have feared most to date. Didnt sleep a wink last night for fear of the unimaginable happening.. Took this from The Artillery Office passing by Imaal Br and heading on up Camara Hill. Was a good trot up there to get us ready for the real slog that is the highest point in Leinster. Although this is generally classed as The Tourist route.. Do not get complaisant.. It is a slog especially when you get to the main gully up towards the plateau before heading for the summit. It was a pretty much straight run all the way and in the fog and extreme cold we hit today at the plateau made it quite difficult to find the Trig but we soldiered on and found it. Froze a little whicl having a well deserves cuppa and sambo and headed back to the car. Was a most enjoyable day out and an awesome way to kick start the New Year :D Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/13/comment/14898/

Yesterday, Tibault and I climbed the Lugnaquillia with our montain bikes. It was a very long ride with lots of parts where we had to carry the bike.... But it was worth it ! And the weather was also amazing ! Linkback: https://mountainviews.ie/summit/13/comment/2669/

Picture: High fliers
padodes on Lugnaquilla, 2007

The bright sunshine over Wicklow last Saturday, 8 September, didn't only entice walkers high into the hills. On top of Lugnaquillia, I was surprised to see a considerable flock of martins - more like a swarm of bees - skimming over the summit and down the steep grassy slopes of the South Prison. The photo was taken at a point along the craggy edge, not far from the trig pillar, and only gives a pale idea of the activity. It's very unusual to find members of the swallow family feeding at this altitude in the hills. Even if they are accomplished high fliers, they usually prefer the richer lowlands. Picture: Snowshoeing up Lugnaquilla through wind blown snow

We climbed Lugnaquilla from the Glen of Imaal on Saturday 9th Jan. 2010. The road in from the N81 was quite icy and snow covered but managed to get as far as Fenton's pub to park. The snow on the walk up was quite soft in places and sometimes knee deep. We were wearing snowshoes on the ascent and were not too troubled by deep snow. Snow was being blown off the surface on the slopes and there was an icy blast on the summit - we could only stay about 20 minutes on the summit due to the severe wind chill. Used our crampons on the descent. Ascent from Fenton's took about 3 - 3.5 hrs and the return about 1.5 hrs - not bad considering the conditions. Climbed Lug on Saturday with two friends starting from the Glenmalure car park. Rain and bad visibility the whole way up. Rain changed to snow on the summit plateau and visibility deteriorated even more. White out. Very cold and wet but an exhilirating climb. To be repeated in clearer weather...
