New national hillwalking group.
An exploratory meeting to see if there is interest in a new national hillwalking interest group was held in Dublin on the 28th April 2007 attracting around 50 people. The meeting, held by the Irish Ramblers Club, heard about the background and the outlines of what the suggested grouping might do. A number of subgroups are proposed in areas such as cooperative holidays, technical interest, challenge walks and bagging, photography, trail-repair etc with an overall binding provided by a website. The Ulster Federation of Rambling Clubs President, Ronnie Carser came to outline how this successful grouping of 28 clubs had got on and offered some advice to the attendees. Ted McGrath, a Wayfarer and speaking in a personal capacity, outlined what he would like to see and also not see in the proposed grouping. There was a brief presentation from each of 7 champions for the different proposed special interest groups and then the meeting broke up into groups to consider each of these. After hearing from each proposed SIG there was further discussion and the creation of an interim or steering committee. Some six people from a mixture of clubs volunteered for this. Special thanks to Anne Morrissey, the Rambler's President who chaired the meeting very ably. A good first start. When we have a fuller report we will include it.
