400m Mountain List
I have just heard that Mountainviews is about to launch a new list of mountains that covers the 400m to 500m summits, adding another 380 tops to the existing total.
I'm not really sure whether to laugh or cry, be happy or completely depressed !!!!!
I started climbing well into my thirties and thought I had Ireland conquered when I completed the "Munros of Ireland" which I purchased in Lynham's pub in Laragh, after my first climb in Wicklow - Camaderry from the car park at Glendalough, for the record.. Took me a few years to cover all of them, with a young family limiting travel etc etc etc. According to my thinking at the time, based on the details in the (otherwise good) publication, there were no "real" mountains in Connaught or Ulster - just a few little hills like the Twelve Bens, which might be useful for a short stroll if you happened to be in the area on a Sunday afternoon, with an hour or two to spare.
Then along came Paddy Dillon's guide to Ireland's 2000' mountains, so I took to the road again, armed with my .5" maps and a mission to complete them over a number of years. Back to the Galtees and Wicklow, ventured into the West and headed North to the Mournes. Soon the Mournes were completed and the focus was on the West and the South - a realisable target was unfolding nicely.
Around this time I first logged onto Simon's "Hill-Walking in Ireland" site that listed mountains in Metric and therefore the 2000' list evolved to 600m list - not too much of a change, but back to Black Hill and others that I could easily have taken in while on the 2000' operation. Shortly afterwards Mountainviews comes along with the 500m list - now regarded as the definitive height for "mountains", so I'm back to the Mournes, back to Wicklow and all over the rest of the country - days spent searching for new tops that I had completely ignored in the past. 450+ mountains; could it be achieved in a lifetime (when you are hitting fifty) perhaps; lets have a go. Approx on third done and with retirement in a few years - well who knows.
So you can understand why I am ecstatic that a new list with another 380 summits have been added - Jazus, back to the Mournes, return to Wicklow AAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I'll be scrambling up cliffs faces at the age of ninty eight !!!!!!!!!!!
I think my only strategy at this stage is to complete a list of "mountains" below 100 metres - all 25,873 of them - that'll sort things out. A week of tramping through the bogs of Longford to bag the 564 summits will give the 400m listers a taste of their own medicine !!!!
