Spike Island is a small island in Cork Harbour and is most famous for housing IRA prisoners. The majority of the island consists of a star shaped fort which was converted into a prison and can now be explored as part of a trip to the island. The official high point looks like it could be in the middle of the prison yard but in truth the high point is the perimeter along the top of the prison walls.
