Highest Corrie in Ireland
Hey everyone, I was just wondering which Corrie Lake in Ireland sits at the highest altitude. I have seen claims all over the net that the corries of the Reeks are the highest, also claims that Croaghaun has the highest corrie. However, I spend a lot of time on Google Earth, and I noticed a corrie in the brandon range between Beenosky and Stradally that is significantly higher than either of the aforementioned locales. This corrie is practically at the peak! Can someone confirm that this is the highest? |

Walking suggestions, help please
Hello. My wife comes from the north and so I have enjoyed many happy times in the Mournes, alone, with family and in some of the walking festivals (which if you haven't tried them I can recommend - with a hearty breakfast at Castlewellan of course).Anyway, we are going to be in our campervan at Donard, to the west of the Wicklow mountains soon. Looking on MountainViews, I was a bit concerned to see that some of the routes near there are a bit churned up by quad bikes and so on. So, I'd really appreciate suggestions from anyone for good walks in that area (I'm fit, experienced, with good gear) with good aesthetic appeal too please. After Donard we're heading north west (not as far as Donegal) so any suggestions over that way would be much appreciated. Then we'll be across to the Mournes - yes I can't stay away. A favourite approach is up via Hares Gap then, as the mood takes, left, right or straight ahead (though I'm not a fan of the bog of Donard!) to then loop round to the woods above Annalong and a pint or two in the Harbour Bar to round things off. |

Sally Gap Impassable Weds 31st Mar
Wickow Mountain Rescue Teams are advising all motorists to stay away from high passes in the Wicklow area. Two motorists have already become stranded today (Wednesday 31st March) in the Sally Gap area due to snow. The snow is continuing to fall and is expected to get worse as the evening and night progress. Temperatures are also expected to fall overnight, and should someone become stranded during the night, the situation could be very dangerous. Hypothermia can occur to people in their own homes, never mind on an isolated mountain pass. Rescue teams have attempted to assess the danger, but failed to reach the Sally Gap despite driving specially adapted vehicles. Because of this and the worsening conditions, we urge motorists to plan their journeys through Wicklow carefully. |

Proposal for a coastal walk.
A proposal that has been made on another website recently by "Kate" that members may be interested in. For reference MV does include a few peaks which would be included in a coastal path and has considered extending the information we provide to more of them.Claim your coastline - and Go Green Road..... Hi Hikers, I've been trging to get the idea of a Green Road off the ground for 3 years - and finally decided to enter it into the www.yourcountryyourcall.ie competition. The idea is to develop a hiking trail around th eentire coastline of the island of ireland. You'll find it under D1977 (posteed by juno) on the site. I'm writing to tell the hikersof Ireland about this idea in the hope they may like to support it. I havea much mor detailed proposal in the attachment for the adjudicators - it's well thought out in terms of distances, staged accomodation and connection to existing inlnad walking routes. So if you like the idea of being able to hike in stages around entire coastline of the island of Ireland, go to the above website, searchfor D1977 - and click 'the thumbs up' symbol. You'll have to login first. Your support won't make the idea the winner - but it will be a genuine expression of a genuine demand for such a project. Thank you in advance - and please circulate this to all you think would like this coastal walking route. http://proposals.yourcountryyourcall.com/ct/ct_a_view_idea.bix?c=D284E307-BEF9-4396-AF6E-14009EAB8647&idea_id=70B49E60-F108-4A25-9765-461369E4AC8E Look forward to seeing ye all walking - Kate |

The Mountain Rescue of a dog.
Wicklows Mountain Rescue Teams responded this afternoon to a rather unusual request for assistance from the Spink Mountain in Glendalough, Co. Wicklow.Rescuers had been taking part in a technical rescue training exercise in Dalkey Quarry in South Dublin when the call for help came through from a young family after their dog fell a considerable distance on steep ground, leaving them gravely concerned for the animals welfare. The owners were very keen to do whatever they could to help their pet, but agreed to wait for the Mountain Rescue team to arrive on scene, lest they themselves ended up in trouble. The dog, a jack russell named Sally, had slipped over the edge of the cliff-top high above the upper lake in Glendalough and came to rest approximately 100 meters down from the top on very difficult terrain. A technical rope rescue system was quickly put in place to allow some of the teams rope rescue specialists abseil (descend) down to Sally's location. They were then able to safely climb back up to the top with the animal where she was reunited with a very thankful owner. Incredibly, Sally was not badly injured in the fall. Mont Blanc
Hi Tiernan, Two friends and I had much the same idea as you in 2008.Ultimately we were beaten back at 4000 meters by a meter of fresh snow from Italy. The most difficult part of high Alpine climbing/walking (apart from the ice, crevasses, snow, cold) is the effect of altitude on your ability to walk.10 kms with 500 meters climb will seem lungbusting. This combined with using crampons on continuous ice is very draining. Also acclimatisation often involves high treks and sleeping in mountain huts in rooms with 20 others in the same room. You will probably have 3 days acclimatising before the actual climb and I would advise you to conserve energy as much as possible on these days, you will need it all later. In 2008 some of our party felt so exhausted after acclimatisation they were not going to attempt Mont Blanc! All in all though I think regular Hillwalking for distances of 15kms plus 6/700 meters climbs are a must, you should be out every weekend and training(perhaps an hour in the gym?) 2 nights per week. You can work up to this and if you have a level of fitness already(what was your time on Galtybeg/Galtymore circit, was this on the black road?) it will be an enormous help. What you don't want to do is struggle from the first day,.If you would like talk about it some more re: gear/guides etc. feel free to drop me a line jackill@mountainviews.ie |

Help and Advice
Hi I need advice please. I am 50 this year. My fitness is not wonderful. However I climbed Galtee Beag and Galtee Mor twice since Xmas. Once in heavy snow conditions and last weekend in excellent conditions. I was reasonably comfortable and not knackered. I would like to register with guides in Chamonix to climb Mont Blanc this August to celebrate my 50. It costs a lot and I would hate to fail miserably. Will I be able to get fit enough in time. link to Facebook?
I use nikerunning.com to log my runs and have the choice to link this with my faceboook account - when my run is uploaded to the nike website it automatically posts to facebook where all my 'friends' can see my running activity. What are the thoughts about something similar for this site? If a comment for a hill, a walk or similar is added this can this can then be notified on facebook and link users back to the comment on the mountainviews website. This will potentially introduce the site to a much wider audience - if say i have 30 friends they will all be notified of my post on mountainviews. There is then the potential for those friends to visit the site and who knows from there - become members, explore new areas, set personal challenges - all the stuff we are already doing. It would be optional so for those who don't like..... |
