Behold the Kingdom!
Conor, we took your advice about water availability and decided to do the classic Glenbeigh Horseshoe with bolt-ons in one day. A magnificent route with the best weather imaginable, giving us 360 degree views the whole way. Some days it just feels extraordinary good to be alive. You certainly live in a beautiful corner of this island, but you have perhaps one of the toughest local 100's... |

All that and you missed Adrian!
I know Adrian Hendroff was down somewhere in South Kerry last weekend too, but not sure the Glenbeigh Horseshoe was on his agenda and know from his FB page that he was east of Mangerton at some stage. Would have hooked up but had a run in Dunmanway Sunday followed by bagging 3 smaller summits in that part of West Cork. Hope ye enjoyed South Kerry, must have had great views of the full Dunkerron Ridge and every coom and valley from Colly. |

Update on Rhododendron rescue
Seems that the rescue was not a trivial matter and it took SEMRA 2 hours to get through 350m of dense vegetation. Unmanaged rhododendrons are now a problem on many Irish hills. For more details see: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27882358 |

The hills are alive with MVers!
After bumping into fellow MVer, Wicklore, the day before on the Glenbeigh Horseshoe, you wouldn't think lightning would strike twice, would you? Wrong! On a sunny Monday afternoon, we had wandered up the quiet and deserted track from a sugar pink farmhouse and were languishing atop Colly when we saw a figure approaching the summit cairn from the direction of the neighbouring valley. We exchanged pleasantries, but the way he was waving his GPS about in an attempt to locate and log the summit had something of Mountainviews about it. Naturally we asked the million dollar question. Affirmative, and it turned out to be Simon Byrne who readers will know from our last newsletter is on a quest to bag all the Vandeleur-Lynam and Arderin summits (454 hills in total), in 12 months! It was an honour to meet this inspirational young man and we wish him the best of luck on the remainder of his extraordinary quest. |

You never know who you'll meet
We were over half way round a Glenbeigh Horseshoe mega route and had begun our descent off Teeromoyle Mountain when we saw a figure making his ascent. This was the first person we had encountered all day. As we approached, the figure looked somehow familiar, the frame, the jaunty gait, walking poles swinging out in front. Just when I had my suspicions about who the mystery figure could be, we heard the strains of a song: 'she'll be coming round the mountain when she comes...' It was none other than Wicklore! It made for a great interlude to our summit bagging exercise to stop and have a chat with him and to exchange some useful information about the remainder of the routes we were all to traverse. On a brutally hot day, he was planing to bag two more summits and, rather than going back the way he had come, was thinking about dropping down from Teermoyle to pick up a track onto the Kerry Way to walk back to his car parked on the road in the valley below Drung Hill. We proceeded to traverse the thrilling arête to Keamconneragh (also known as Teeromoyle Tooth) and were approaching the top of Mullaghnarakill, when we spied Wicklore heading up the slopes below. Atop the summit we stopped for an energy bar break and to admire the views, and were soon reunited with him. He had decided to head back the same way after all and very kindly offered to drive us back to Glenbeigh where he was also staying. I can't tell you all how grateful we were to him for that lift! For after bagging the hag ridden Been Hill and slogging it up Beenmore, only to be confronted by a viciously steep and long descent off Drung Hill onto the stony Kerry Way, the thought of our now weary feet having to follow that all the way back to our hostel in Glenbeigh as planned, had somewhat lost its allure! Wicklore sums up all that is good and fine and noble about hill walking and the lovely camaraderie that exists among our community. Thanks once again. |

A new threat to hillwalkers?
It seems that hillwalkers in Ireland face a new threat - from rhododendron. As reported on RTE a couple out walking in the Knockmealdowns had to call out mountain rescue after becoming trapped by rhododendron branches. http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/0617/624367-rhododendron-rescue/ |

Tops
Great result for Trailtrekker. If this were the only reason to propose such a thing as County Tops, you could count me in.Great achievement by TT and great plan in the first place. Perhaps let his mark in the sand be a target for all of us for more of the same. Very well done. |

It is Accomplished!
Completing all the Leinster County Tops within 24 hours has been probably the most enjoyable and rewarding of the many challenges I have taken on over the last few years! Completed with a great team of four this weekend in a time of 22.51.15- 1 Car, 1 tank of diesel, 4 drivers, through 13 counties and nearly 500 miles of driving - A total of 47.5km of hill walking, ascending 3,413 metres - Starting at 11am on Saturday morning from the summit of Lugnaquilla and finishing at 9.50am on a Sunny Sunday morning on the summit of Slieve Foye. I tried to upload the GPS track, but the website seems to split it up into different tracks! |

Pots of Excitement
There are various acceptable ways on to Slieve Commedagh. The Pot of Pulgarve is not one of them. There are various acceptable ways into The Pot of Pulgarve. The one I took today is not one of them. There are various acceptable ways to describe this experience. The one I have in mind is abso defo not one of them. All the same, I would commend it. Newcastle Co Down, Glen River track, hang a right into the Pot and well ......... |
