Baah!
Ah march-fixer - lone voices in the wilderness. I have been puffing out sound and fury over this foolishness for years now.
....... but like the Baptist I am going to keep on with my wild and noisy exhortations until one day someone comes along, someone with a lot more clout than I, who will rattle this cage very hard and we shall see what kind of smoke and mirrors fall out ......
Man with the sand down on bended knee to his God of self righteousness .......
" .... I am here a chosen sample,
To show thy grace is great and ample;
I'm here a pillar o' Thy temple,
Strong as a rock,
A guide, a buckler, and example,
To a' Thy flock."

........ where he leads I shall not be following - unless I want a busted pelvis of course.

Horror Picture Book
Keep up the great work. Loved this creative piece of work. It is a damn site more creative than what seems to be happening on the hills. It took me a while to read it as I had to wipe the laughter tears from my eyes. More please!

Horror Picture Book
... and today children, we're going to look through the ......... ass-half window.
And what do we see?
We see bags, white bags. I wonder what's inside.
It's sand! Yes - sand!
We wonder where it came from. Maybe from the seaside. The lovely seaside.
And a man has brought it here in a helicopter and dropped it from 'way up there - plop - right on to our mountain.
Aren't we glad we weren't under it. Plop right on our noggins. What a fright that would be.
The man has come to put sand on our mountain because he doesn't like it the way it is. The mountain is no good without sand. It needs sand.
So what kind of sand is it?
It is the kind he put on another mountain near here. Lots and lots of it so that it is very slidy. Isn't is funny to see people fall on their bottoms and say "What stupid phocker put that here - it's phockin lethal."
And now children we have to leave the sand and the man. He is very busy and doesn't want us to get in the way of his important work.
Bye bye sand. Bye bye phocker man.

Blackstairs trumps Mt Leinster...
Thanks Scapania. Parked at Scollogue Gap and walked up Blackstairs. The day was so good and the turf so wonderfully springy that couldn't resist jogging down to do it in an hour, so had time to do Mt Leinster too. Not nearly as nice as its neighbour, route an ugly tarmac scar, summit an ugly mast. Def right to recommend Blackstairs first. Both have wonderful views though.

RARE BITS
North Wales. Completely fantastic. Knowing nothing about it some years ago, I wouldn't have troubled myself to look at it even if dropped there by helicopter.
Teeth cut on the Scottish Munros and 15 years joining the dots across Ireland, what could North Wales possibly offer?
If ever there were an argument for an open mind, North Wales is it.
With a party of the Wee Binnians, NI's elite walking group I ventured into these stunningly exciting hills - and in a snowy March.
We stayed in Caernarfon - wonderful port town with great pubs, restaurants and one of the biggest eff-off castles the English ever built. Plan - to piss off the rebellious Welsh. Result: Sassenach 10 ; Druids 0.
1 mega day in its hills. To be honest I cannot recall the route but it kicked off with something to do with Pigs, included Tryfan, gave us the Glyders (described here a bit dismissively as "obvious" - well, it wasn't to me) and some other wonderful stuff .......
You know how there are memorable days in the hills? This was way up there.
Off this route there is a clamber on to Crib Goch ridge. A couple of us in good shape studied through binos a team battling with the entree on to it and decided to give it a wide berth - so anyone looking for a stomach-churning, might consider this.
Incidentally these are serious hills and not to be dongled around with.
Very best wishes to the team heading off there. If you are mesmerised and as Pete advises (rather cleverly)....., it is not unusual.

Re: Blackstairs Mt or Mt Leinster
Hi Conor, I did Mt. Leinster and Blackstairs in a day a couple of weeks ago, neither take long or pose much of a challenge. If you're really stuck for time, you can be up and down Mt. Leinster by the road to the mast in no time at all, but there's nothing really to recommend it, except that its a county high point. Blackstairs Mt. is much more pleasant, its a nice stroll from near the Sculloge Gap, the route up by Caher Roe's Den to the south looked quite pleasant too. The only shame is the whole mountain seems to have been burnt quite recently, so not much to see near at hand, but the views make up for it.

Blackstairs Mountain or Mt. Leinster?
Will be in Wexford this weekend.

Will have a 2 hour window of opportunity to slip away and bag a summit. Sadly this won't leave me with enough time to do both. Presume Mt. Leinster is the more obvious one, county high, highest in range etc. On the other hand, there are some with those honours, like Knockboy in Cork, where I would tell someone to avoid cos its just a slog in a bog and pck a more attractive one nearby.

So, any recommendations?

Contemporary problem, ancient solution?
Seeing as the problem of break-ins to vehicles in mountain areas apparently got so far as to be mentioned on RTE Radio 1 today, maybe it's time to consider radical measures to combat the thieves?
