Re Lay Down your weary Lens
Oh what merciless analytical derision. Oh what rejection. The idea of fusing the best in companionable walking with modern possibility cast down, its opportunity unexplored.

Weedavie, as you climb to wrestle with the iron in your soul, I invite you to consider how you can say "I am". Isn't it through your experiences recorded in your memory? And, isn't memory fickle?

I beg to differ that photographs necessarily detract from the moments we value and the moments which define us. I think often the exact opposite can be true. When your fickle mind has started to forget a trip, the people and the views some well chosen pictures can revive your memory and bring it flooding back in. You can relive the moment and so powerful can this be and you can do this with friends. (At the risk of further outright rejection can I also say that interactive landscape visualisation can also add to the sense of place both before and after the trip. And couple it with trip reports from friends -met personally or online- and even wider perspectives emerge.)

Of course there is nothing worse than sitting through an hour of someone's snaps of a holiday you didn't share. It can be boorish to subject people to this. Boorish also to attempt impose unreasonable demands for photography while walking. People must have an understanding as to whether they are there to enhance walking with photograpy or the other way around.

The approach I favour for many group situations is to bring a lightweight high performance camera, big zoom, no spare lenses. Small bag worn outside and learn how to take a simple record picture in 15 seconds. Learn how to involve other walkers. Know when there really is a magic view and establish sufficient tolerance for it to be properly recorded.
