County Highpoints
The Irish County Highpoints (27 in list)
This is a list of the highest mountains in each of the traditional counties on the island of Ireland. This type of list is commonly referred to as "The County Highpoint List," often abbreviated as "CHP."
Ireland has 32 traditional counties; however, some counties share the same location as their highest point. For example, Sawel is the highest point in both Derry and Tyrone, while Galtymore serves as the highest point for both Limerick and Tipperary. Because of these overlaps, there are only 27 CHPs in total.
This list offers a great introduction to the challenge of visiting all the summits in Ireland. It will take participants (we call them summiteers) to diverse and sometimes unexpected locations — from peaks such as Knockboy in Cork to less well known spots like Truskmore SE Cairn, which is not a mountain top at all, but remains the highest point in Leitrim.
Overall, this list highlights the varied experiences Irish hillwalking has to offer. Whether you're climbing majestic peaks or visiting less conventional highpoints, you'll encounter the incredible natural diversity of Ireland's landscape. Enjoy the journey!
MountainViews will be switching over to this newer listing section soon. However there are a few features that we have not yet implemented in the new listing system. You can get the equivalent old page here.
