Range & Mountain Area Highpoints (77 in list)

This is a list of the highest point in each "Range" or "Mountain Area" in the island of Ireland. So for example Carrauntoohil is included, it being the highest mountain in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks.

It is a list that brings you to a wide variety of mountain areas in Ireland, some of which are well known such as Wicklow, the Mournes or the Twelve Bens. Some of the areas are not so well known, such as Partry & Joyce, Boggeragh Mountains, North Antrim or West Clare.

There are various reasons for completing this list. By definition it will bring the summiteer to a wide range of different areas of Ireland. It is also useful if you have completed the "County Highpoints" and want a further list in its same style of very varied geographical locations. If you have completed the County Highpoints then you will have already visited 19 of the Range & Mountain Area Highpoints.

Where did the "Mountain Areas" come from? It is handy to think of mountains as being in groups such as the Blackstairs or in the Mournes and MountainViews has attempted to group all hills and mountains. For most of the higher mountains there are well known historical names for the areas. Loosely these could be called "Ranges", though the definition isn't agreed on. However when looking at lower hills down to 100 metres, MountainViews has needed to add further mountain areas. Some of these did have names such as for example the Nagles Mountains.

In 2022 MV re-visualised each area and subarea.

However some important hills or mountains did not fit into the historical named ranges or at least ones that we could find.

Starting in the early 2000s, MountainViews therefore named various extra mountain areas, for example Keenaght (in Ulster) or West Connemara. These areas and names provide the same benefits of grouping hills and mountains, though they are more a proposal than something that is universally accepted. MV is happy to change names and mountain areas if there is evidence that this is needed. Our most recent general revision of mountain areas was in 2022. At that time we also reformed the Mountain Sub Areas, proposing some 405 of these - the SubAreas appear in our pages for summits but not at present as a list. The Range Highpoints listing was introduced on 1st Jan 2025.
