[RWD version 1 ] This looks fairly straightforward, and to a certain respect it is, except for the complication that the final 600m is first through forest and then across very rough, energy-sapping terrain. I expected a return trip to take 90 minutes. In the end it took over 2 hours, thanks mostly to the final section. Started at a forest entrance with multiple car spaces and a sign for the 'Source of the River Blackwater.' The first 2km or so are a simple walk up a windfarm/forest trail, enlivened by a couple of pools and small streams.

Having reached the most north-easterly turbine, I crossed about 30m of rough ground towards the forest. I then had an uncomfortable trudge through semi-mature trees on very spongy/mossy ground, eventually emerging onto the open hillside.

The rough terrain atop Baraveha
Things didn’t improve after that as the ground all the way to the highpoint was a mix of knee-high heather and soggy grass, with very soft ground underfoot – it was like walking on a wet sponge – and I fell several times. It took me almost 30 minutes to cover 500m, but it was February after a very wet spell, so perhaps it’s not so bad in a drier season.

Highpoint marker
The highpoint was marked by a metal pole and something called a Mestastic Weather Node, which included a small panel reading ‘Baraveha 451m.’ Returned almost via the same route. A bagger’s hill.
