Track Rating ..
[RWD version 1 ] If you’re approaching this hill from the east, be aware that the road leading up to the start point is in a terrible condition for the last 1km – deep ruts, large potholes, covered in mud – and the wheels of my car almost slithered into a rut several times and I was fearful of getting lodged there.

The 'track' - fight your way through that!
If that’s not bad enough, the first 600m of ‘track’ indicated on maps is also in an appalling condition – extremely muddy, multiple fallen trees, brambles, overgrown with gorse in places – and it was an enormous relief to finally reach the Coillte track. You have been warned. After that, it was a relatively simple, if boring, walk of about 2km to reach the summit. The last section was a bit of a slog through heather but not for too long.

Another section of track, and this is one of the better bits.
But I wonder about the highpoint, as both my eye and my GPS agree that a heathery rise about 400m south of the ‘official’ highpoint is actually 2m higher – and someone had even marked it with a thin pole. I visited both points just to be sure. Decent views from the summit area.

View from near highpoint.
Returned largely the same way and had to beat my way down the last bit one more, emerging mud-caked, scratched and miserable two and a half hours after I’d left. Another one for the baggers, but it would be worth investigating alternate routes up rather than face that hellish first 600m.
