Track Rating ..
[RWD version 1 ] For anyone attempting the Art O'Neill Challenge this route might offer some food for thought and makes two significant variances from more traditional routes! Having done the challenge more times than is reasonable we fully endorse these alternatives!

Starting at Ballinagee, near what will be checkpoint two for the event, this route follows the forest tracks to the gate and out onto the track beside the Kings river. This route chooses to avoid all the nasty steep ascents near Art's plaque and instead crosses the river relatively early. This allows you to take a more benign approach over reasonable open mountainside up towards the cross.

The cloud was down on our visit and there were a few course corrections needed after leaving the cross! The target from the cross should be to the right of the 702 unnamed spot height north east of Conavalla. We thoroughly hate the bog hopping that is the route to the lakes and this avoids all that and the reason for dialling in this route. Once passed this you are coming down the head of the valley with Conavalla to your right. Keep the stream to your right at all times and avoid the temptation to get sucked in closer to the forest on the right, you will just give away unnecessary ground and height. Your target is the bottom of the forest. Cross the stream here. The next section is wet, very wet (not an uncommon thing in these parts!) with high grass until you reach the cleared forest. This is the last bit of unpleasantness, before you join a very old and over grown forest track which will lead you down to the table track and well, after that you are golden... once you don't slip on this notoriously slippy track!
