This is a straightforward route using the sides or the bed of a river, to and from Frigiliana, a small town around 300m above sea level and inland from Nerja.
Initially the river Chillar starts in Nerja and it is possible to walk along its sides. We found the east side path more consistent.

Much of the walk is on the dry riverbed. The vegetation on the sides looks like bamboo, however I suspect that it is actually sugarcane because Nerja was an important area historically for growing and processing this as a crop.

There is a split in the river just north of a large autovia bridge. Take the west most route, which is known as the Rio Higueron.
Eventually the Higueron narrows to a canyon, but just before that roads on both sides appear, meeting in a ford.

To the left can be seen the steep road that ascends to the south end of Frigiliana.

Ascend the steep road and you will emerge eventually onto regular streets at the south end of the town.

Note, this town is a major starting place for local people to walk from. There appear to be many signposted routes as well as great eating facilities for returning walkers.

Where we were many walkers were returning from walks at 13:00, no doubt to cope with the Spanish sun, which can make the unprepared uncomfortable.

Transport to and from Frigiliana isn't that frequent, probably only around once every 90 mins or so. The service on Sundays is less frequent.

NOTE: ALL information such as Ascent, Length and Creator time taken etc should be regarded as approximate. The creator's comments are opinions and may not be accurate or still correct.
Your time to complete will depend on your speed plus break time and your mode of transport. For walkers: Naismith's rule, an approximate though often inaccurate estimate, suggests a time of 3h 56m + time stopped for breaks
NOTE: It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission.

* Note: A GPS Height in the elevation profile is sourced from the device that recorded the track. An "SRTM" height is derived from a model of elevations for parts of the earth. More detail
