Track Rating ..
[RWD version 1 ]
This is a very accessible route to the Brandon Ridge. We climbed it as an "out and back" route, parking at Q47034 06873 with space for a few cars and a sign that prohibits dogs, but thankfully not hikers. The zig zag track winds upwards past a sheep shelter which merits an architectural award for design and functionality.
Higher up the track passes close to a small lake called Loch na mBan and there are views of the larger lakes on the valley floor.
The track eventually reaches the ridge and peters out into some Quad bike tracks, which are on very wet ground. It's easier to cross from the top of the track to the fence and then head upwards towards Gearhane, picking as dry a path as possible. The summit is heralded by a large gate (closed)
Thereafter it's careful progress along the ridge to gain Brandon Peak - there are steep falls on each side and no escape route but the Peak is easily reached from the col. In good weather, the views are excellent, particularlly north westward towards the Three Sisters and Mount Eagle.
This being Kerry, we lost visibility at the top of the ridge, so even more careful progress was needed, though a very clear track makes navigation easy.
The return journey was by the same route, the gentle gradient of the zig zag track made for a surprisingly easy descent.
