Early morning view of Carrigaloughra from the strating point.
Walk SE along the road to a wobbly gate on left, cross this and follow a very rough track that curves up towards the hill, appearing and disappearing regularly. Continue up the gently sloping hillside, which unfortunately is quite rough and you will have to wade through large patches of knee-high grass and heather and cross two barbed wire fences. Despite this you reach top within 30 minutes or less.

Carrigaloughra summit area
The summit area is marked by some prominent rocky outcrops. Return to your starting point, cross the road and continue up the wide track to the west, which is a bit steeper in parts than the first hill. This eases after about 800m where the track curves around to the right. Take the next left after the bend.

You will have to cross a farm gate that warns that you are entering a private farm and ‘No authorised persons’, but a local farmer up ahead saw me and waved, so I assume this is not a major issue. After a further 500m, you will see a trig pillar on the right.

Good views towards Lackabaun to the south. While the hill isn’t much to look at from the east, as I was driving away along the road that curves around to the north, I saw that that face of the mountain is very impressive indeed, with cliff-like approaches and fine views.
