markwallace: Track 5145 in area near Knocknashee, Ox Mountains (Ireland)
Signposted route up small but notable hill
Length: 2.2km, Creator time taken: 30m23s, Ascent: 140m,
Descent: 142m

Places: Start at G5626918894, Knocknashee, end at Start

The trailhead is situated near and signposted from the tiny village of Lavagh, with Tobercurry the nearest town. The walk is suitable for youngish children and is very short but steep enough to get the lungs going and provide a sense of having climbed something. The summit is grassy and flattish, but just compact enough (and far away enough from other high ground) to provide a superb panorama.

It looks over the plain west to the Ox Mountains and north to the Dartrys and other hills of Sligo, then across the indistinct boggy ridges of north Leitrim to Cuilcagh. I could see the Atlantic around Knocknarea, and Croagh Patrick and Nephin in Mayo were hazily visible. South and south-east is an expanse of flat midlands terrain as far as the eye can see.

Once proud trig pillar, fallen on evil days.

The trig pillar at the summit is still as forlorn and fallen over as it was when a commenter on this site noted it in 2014. There are megalithic cairns on the summit as well. There is parking as the trailhead, enough on the day but not a huge amount. Path is mostly stony and well-constructed but grassy at the summit, though not wet or mucky when I did it.

Highly recommended short hike for families or anyone looking for something rewarding but not time-consuming.

Croagh Patrick was in this picture, but it is very hard to see - maybe impossible in the uploaded version.

NOTE: ALL information such as Ascent, Length and Creator time taken etc should be regarded as approximate. The creator's comments are opinions and may not be accurate or still correct.
Your time to complete will depend on your speed plus break time and your mode of transport. For walkers: Naismith's rule, an approximate though often inaccurate estimate, suggests a time of 0h 40m + time stopped for breaks
NOTE: It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission.

* Note: A GPS Height in the elevation profile is sourced from the device that recorded the track. An "SRTM" height is derived from a model of elevations for parts of the earth. More detail
