[RWD version 1 ] Tough walk with some very steep climbing initially and then some very rough ground in the lengthy col. Room for one car at the start point. Crossed fence and headed directly up the grassy slope – this is a one in two gradient at times and you will gain about 160m ascent in just 300m. Great views on the ascent though, which give you a good excuse for a breather.

The slope eases to something altogether more manageable – a mixture of short heather and grass, and you will have only 60m climbing over a distance of about 600m to reach the cairn on the fairly well-defined summit.

It apparently has great views of Glencar Lough, but there was mist the day I did it. Turned west/north-west and dropped down to 380m in the lengthy col, which was a horrible mixture of water-logged peat hags, reeds, boggy areas and uneven ground. Although Copes was just 2km away, it seemed much further due to terrain.

There is also a false summit about 200m before the real top, which is unmarked but has good views of Sligo coast.data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==Wanting to avoid the unpleasantness of the approach, I followed a route back that was more to the south, picked up a fence and followed it SE for over 1km. Although some of the ground was a bit rough, it was far better than the more northerly route, and I’d suggest you take this path.Eventually linked up with my original track, but veered ESE around Crockauns SW flank and picked up my trail again near the edge of the plateau. I descended backwards, clinging to the fence, which proved the safest way to descend the very steep slope.
