A walk of almost 10km, most of which is along forest trails. There is parking for about 10 cars in the Barnesmore Gap car park. I crossed the road (carefully – it’s very busy) to the forest entrance about 50m north and proceeded NW up the track, which swings to the NE after 1km, and affords good views of Croaghconnellagh and the valley to the north of this.
Continued along this for a further 2.5km, but couldn’t find the forest break previous posters have referred to, so worked my way through the mature trees for about 100m to emerge on to the open hillside, which wasn’t too difficult.
Proceeded NW for another 1km up the steepening slope, which was mostly grassy, some heather and then more exposed rock the higher I went, which aided my ascent somewhat. Good views also on the ascent. The summit area is broad and rocky, and the highpoint, marked by a pile of rocks on a boulder, is towards the southern end.
My return was via a route more to the south, which took me to a deepish gully.
I followed this SE into the forest, where reeds made walking difficult, so I then entered the trees again and had a fairly easy 150m walk dodging low branches to return me to the main track, from where I retraced my steps.
Just shy of 3.5 hours, but I admit I was taking it very easy having already bagged Croaghonagh earlier that day.
