Track Rating ..
[RWD version 1 ] Having discovered that our planned route from the south was now off limits (No Entry! Private Property! etc) we drove around to the start of a track to the north, where there was parking for one car without blocking gates. We went to the farm next to the track to ask permission but there was no one about, so we set off. After about 300m through farmland, the track led into a Coillte forest, some of which had been felled.

Good views on ascent
Good views of the Wicklow Mts. on ascent, accentuated by the presence of carpets of foxgloves. We followed until the track began to peter out around the 350m elevation mark, then set off across the mostly grassy slope to reach the highpoint - a slightly elevated grassy mound next to a fence - after about 500m.

Carpets of foxglove
Turning SE we followed the southern edge of the wood, crossed a fence and entered the woodland – it is mature and easily navigated, emerging about 400m from the summit of Spinan’s SE Top.

Spinnan's highpoint
Things started to get a bit rougher after that, as the entire summit area is surrounded by dense ferns, some of them chest-high, and the terrain underfoot is very rough, rocky and uneven, with multiple potential ankle-breaking opportunities.

The rugged, ankle-breaking final approach to the SE Top
After we crossed the ancient wall, the area becomes grassy with a prominent rocky/grassy outcrop at its centre, which marks the highpoint. It’s probably best to ignore the descent on our track and return via the same route, as we spent the next half hour descending through the ferns, falling repeatedly, before making it back to the woods.

A ruined cottage we passed on the descent
We then had to cross farmland, including multiple fences and gorse before we found another track that led us to a bull! We had to quickly circumnavigate the bull via more fields and fences before emerging back next to the farmhouse. Interesting hills nonetheless, the SE Top in particular.
