This was a surprisingly challenging walk for a modest hill under 400m. We parked at a lay by on the R336 and walked towards Maam Cross until we reached the Western Way entrance. This section of the Western Way is over rough bogland and the sleepers are very dilapidated (Apr 24), so think about whether you want to risk walking on them. At the first clearing in the forest on the left, there's a view of Lackavrea. Leave the Western Way and head for the mountain, over rough grass and heather, initially a gradual rise but getting steeper and rockier as you near the summit. Without good scrambling skills, it's preferable to stay to the left of the steep rocks and approach the higher slopes over heather and rock. There are excellent views over Corcóg and Loch Mhám Aodha. The summit is reached after a pleasant (and safe) ridge walk and it provides views of Loughs Corrib and Mask. Although a number of routes have suggested a descent to the lake, we felt that was much too steep and we continued along the ridge, gradually descending with a panorama of the Maamturks in view. We stayed on the visibly higher ground, contouring around to rejoin the R336, just after a memorial to a runner who died on a run. Just after the memorial there was a strainer in the fence which had been made from a telegraph pole and had useful foot holders which enabled us to scale the relatively high fence safely.
