[RWD version 1 ]
Slightly more interesting than I had anticipated, Cratlieve is an easy bag, with a good track for about half the climb, and then some interesting rocky outcrops. It also has a fairly well defined summit area with a few small boulders marking the highpoint (placed or natural I cannot say.) It has decent views of the more substantial Mournes to the south and of Slieve Croob just to the east.
Cratlieve seen from the road.
I parked at the public car park at the entrance to Slieve Croob (usually lots of spaces) and walked down the road, turning right on to the Finnis Road for about 200m, ignoring the first track on the left that leads to a cottage and then taking the more substantial grassy track that will take you up about 380m elevation.
Grassy track leads the way.
Go through a gate on the left and the track begins to deteriorate but continues for a while before vanishing altogether. The ground underfoot nevertheless is grassy and remains firm – easy going. Passed between a couple of large rocky outcrops, crossed a slightly boggier bit and then up to the highpoint, marked by some small boulders as I mentioned.
Highpoint with Slieve Croob in the background.
I was back in my car after 1 hour, and that had included a leisurely 15-minute lunch at the top. Decent, easy bag.
