Colin Murphy: Track 4977 in area near Knockbrack South Top, West Cork Mountains (Ireland)
Short, rewarding loop.
Length: 4.5km, Creator time taken: 1h52m, Ascent: 254m,
Descent: 258m

Places: Start at V9873669116, Knockbrack South Top, Coomclogherane Top, end at Start

A very enjoyable, short trek with little effort, some good tracks, fantastic views and two Carns in the bag. The starting point is a farmyard, where the very friendly farmer gave us permission to park, directions and some potted local history.
Looking for the pot of gold.
Headed west up a good trail, accompanied by a rainbow, that eventually swung south before petering out, but by then we were at about 410m elevation. Continued south up the gentle slope over a mixture of grass and heather, with only a couple of damp areas. A wifi-gadget (the farmer’s) is to be seen near the top, and the grassy high point is just beyond it, with great views towards the valley surrounding Coomclogherane Lough on three sides.

Continued SE, dropping to just 390m, before a short ascent to another grassy high point. If you continue SE for another 250m down a steepish slope, you pick up another very good, grassy trail, that will take you back to the starting point.
Grassy summit of Coomclogherane
Along the way you will see many curious structures made from boulders piled on top of each other, looking like prehistoric structures, but these are actually the work of the farmer, who, many years ago, extracted them from the ground to improve the quality of his fields.
One of many of the farmer's artworks!
His semi-artistic boulder constructions made for an interesting stroll back up a gentle slope to the farmyard, where his wife offered us a cup of coffee! Very enjoyable couple of hours and couple of Carns.

NOTE: ALL information such as Ascent, Length and Creator time taken etc should be regarded as approximate. The creator's comments are opinions and may not be accurate or still correct.
Your time to complete will depend on your speed plus break time and your mode of transport. For walkers: Naismith's rule, an approximate though often inaccurate estimate, suggests a time of 1h 20m + time stopped for breaks
NOTE: It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission.

* Note: A GPS Height in the elevation profile is sourced from the device that recorded the track. An "SRTM" height is derived from a model of elevations for parts of the earth. More detail
