[RWD version 1 ] A relatively low midlands hill doesn’t usually excite the average hillwalker much, but this little hill offers an interesting little trek up its slopes thanks to its geological make-up and the fact that it is a European Special Area of Conservation thanks to the presence of several special of rare wild orchids.

As against that I was shocked, quite literally, a couple of times, when crossing the multiple electric fences that stand in your path. I counted five in all, and while I managed to step over a couple and crawl under one, two of them came into contact with me and delivered quite a nasty electrical jolt.

When trying not to be illuminated by the power lines, I did get to enjoy the sight of what I think were hawthorn trees springing up here and there from the thin coating of soil amid a scattering of rocks, and the striking chunks of limestone protruding occasionally from the grassy carpet, and the generally pleasing terrain.

Most of the route is up a good track, and you have to traverse several gates, along with the aforementioned electrified fences. Signs request that you keep the gates closed, which suggests that there is no issue with access, as the tracks are mostly through farmland. When the track runs out, it is necessary to make a 400m trek across the long grass to the summit, curiously topped by largish chunks sandstone, some of them upright. A simple, interesting and electrical experience.
