By using the National park bus to Alto De Chorillo any reasonably fit person can climb Mulachen 3482m the highest Mountain on Mainland Spain, having done this before our attention was drawn to a more interesting route via the Vasar on the North face, from Alto de Chorillo it is approx 4.5km to the entrance to the Vasar Del Mulachen a very narrow and exposed in places path, that takes one to a lofty situation across the North face of Mulachen at an altitude of 3000mts most of the way along. Our first view of the path left us a bit daunted as it was a bit difficult to see how the crossing might be achieved, but there is plenty of information about the route which can be viewed before undertaking the challenge, to put one`s mind at ease. The path ? in some places provides only enough space for one`s proper foot placement and is exposed at times, the situation is superb with fine views northwards and down towards Laguna del la Mosca. The strangest thing is that we never felt in any way that is was difficult or exposed despite the Humongous drop to one side of us for our trip across. Once across it was up a climb up a stony gully to the Collado de Siete de Lagunas, then up to Puntal de Siete Lagunas at 3244m. The east face of Mulachen looms large from here, and unfortunately Onzy my fellow traveller opted to go back across the Vasar and I headed up a very steep and loose scree slope, once above this I was able to follow a few stoney ramps which led me back out onto the north face again, now a lot higher up onto another exposed path that zig zagged up underneath the summit and ended with a 10 minute scramble over some huge bouldery sections that led directly to the trig point. I was greeted by a throng of people at the top, who had made their way by some other routes. Now followed a fairly east trek down the well made track to Alto De Choriillo. All told a great hike in the Spanish high Sierra Nevada .
