[RWD version 1 ] This was my final Antrim mountain or hill – I saved one of the best for last.

The impressive bulk of Slemish
While it didn’t take long (30 minutes for the actual ascent), the route I chose was a bit precarious. After the initial stroll up through the green area from the car park, I followed a narrow trail snaking up and around to the north.

The slope tells its own story
As I progressed the climb became much steeper and I actually lost the trail a couple of times. Once or twice I was actually nervous as I clambered over boulders while clinging to clumps of heather with a sheer drop below me.

The sun peeking over the summit through milky cloud
The slope finally eased around the 380m mark, much to my relief, and I clambered up the remaining hillside to the flattish summit area.

The flattish summit
Not wanting to return the same way, mostly because I was afraid to, but also to make it more of a looped walk, I continued SSE past summit. I made a brief diversion to the southern side of the hill to watch four hawks swirling and swooping in the windy air – they almost seemed to be doing it for fun!

The descending track is much more user-friendly
I then returned towards the summit and headed down the steep track to the south of the high point, which proved much safer than my ascent. A very enjoyable climb all round.
