The pleasures to be had with this Carn are in the ascent rather than the actual reaching of the highpoint. It’s a fairly straightforward affair. There are a couple of parking spots to be found on the road running N/S past Easky Lough. Cross the flattish area of tussocky grass to the east, which is squishy in parts, even in summer.
After about 400m you will start ascending up a mostly grassy slope interspersed with boulders and rocky outcrops. The slope is steep in parts, but walkable. As you rise the views go up in proportion and by the time you’ve reached 350m, weather permitting, you will enjoy a spectacular vista looking down over the large Easky Lough and several of its smaller, neighbouring loughs like Loughanaboll.
There are also fine views to be had along the valley to the south. The slope eases around 380m but the grass is replaced by heather-covered peat.
From this point you will be about 300m from the highpoint, and you will have to negotiate a couple of peat hag areas to reach it. Even in summer these are quite boggy. The summit is totally unremarkable – pick your heathery mound – and the trio of loughs that decorate the summit area aren’t visible from the highpoint. But the climb makes this a very worthwhile bag.
