[RWD version 1 ]
I was in two minds about this walk as I was afraid the col between Coolnasillagh and Bohilbreaga might be impassable, but it wasn’t too bad as it happened. There is parking for a couple of cars on a minor road just off the A6 south of Glenshane Forest. Unfortunately the spot has also been used as a dump by idiots.
I walked up the road (which is almost drivable for first 700m) and followed it as it curved up and around towards the high point of Coolnasillagh, which is marked by a couple of stones atop a mound about 50m from track.
Fine views to north towards White & Corick Mts.
The track continues for a bit past the high point but then disappears as you descend towards the col and Bohilbreaga. The descent is mostly across grass and firm underfoot. You will see a fence running west towards the northern flank of the mountain.
You can see the fence running towards the northern flank of Bohilbreaga
Aim for this if you can. Parts of the col are indeed waterlogged, but you can avoid most of them by waling on the slightly elevated bank of turf supporting the fence. Having negotiated the col, the ground begins to rise steeply in parts, but underfoot it is more grass and firm ground. Eventually you will encounter the small boulders as the steep southern side of Bohilbreaga is mostly scree. You can zig-zag up the steepest final part of the climb to eventually emerge on to a long heathery, summit area running to the south. Follow a fence up the now gently rising slope to the top. The high point is unmarked – pick your mound of heather. Return via the same route. Total walk 2.5 hours approx.
