[RWD version 1 ]
This route rises to Mullaghcleevaun, Wicklow's second highest summit, by its broad SW ridge. It starts in the Kings River valley and after rising through forestry does a partial circuit of the Glenbride valley. By using the SW ridge you avoid the even boggier SE Mullaghcleevaun ridge, Barnacullia, with it's reputation for long stretches of exposed black peat. The day we did it was immediately after the wettest March on record. This is an area with a lot of bog, but nevertheless it was passable. Having reached Mullaghcleevaun we headed to Moanbane over Billy Byrne's gap.
The top of Moanbane and indeed the whole ridge SW towards Silsean is pretty wet.
We headed back to the forest from where we had emerged. Just be careful of Cleevaun Brook, the main river of the Glenbride valley. It can be impassable after the various tributaries have joined it. All in all a handy route that avoids public road walking.
