[RWD version 1 ]
This hike has lots of points of interest, two river crossings, two mountain peaks, great views and is a great walk. Starting off from the Wicklow Way North carpark, head initially North for 100 yards before turning right and following the Robber's Pass trail South through the Ballinastoe Woods trail, emerging near Pier Gates
Enter the Luggala estate and follow the trail down towards Lough Dan. The scenery here is beautiful and historic, with plenty of deer grazing to your left as you follow the trail.
As you reach Lough Dan, pass the two story boarded-up house and then turn right up a trail to the summit of Knocknacloghoge. Its steep but very manageable, so long as you manage you pace.
After summitting Knocknacloghoge, descend Northward through the heather towards Fancy / Luggala Mountain. You will need to cross the Cloghoge river by stepping from rock to rock, so be sure to have your walking poles at the ready. The stones can be quite slippy, so take care. If necessary, walk upstream to find a manageable crossing. Then return to the trail and ascend Fancy.
Fancy is very boggy as you approach the summit. Be sure to look back and observe the heather cuts on Knocknacloghoge. These are intended to support Red Grouse population.
From the summit of Fancy, follow the North-East trail along the cliffs with spectacular views over Lough Tay, the set of Vikings, and the Luggala Lodge. Contour and descend gradually towards the Luggala Stream above Lough Tay towards the point where a tributary (Freestone Brook) joins. This is sometimes tricky crossing where, depending on the flow, you may need to cross further upstream. Having crossed, follow the brook up to Sheepbanks Bridge. At this point, you can follow the road southwards to the carpark. (If you have more energy to burn off, an alternative return is uphill across boggy terrain to War Hill, then joining the trail to Djouce and onwards to the carpark.
