For this little day-off summiteering shlep I stood on the shoulders of a relative giant, namely the great CaptainVertigo whose site contributions have always gone beyond mere 'info about hillwalking'. Happening upon his track for exploring the main block of Comeragh summits I chopped and changed it to come up with something allowing me to visit some unvisited tops and cover some uncovered ground.

Like the Captain I left my car at the Mahon Falls car park; he then rolled his bike down the hill to the south to commence his ambulations from there, whereas I headed off in the opposite direction along the easy (but somewhat livid, to these eyes) track to the falls, scrambling up their true left side before picking my way across the moor to the knob of Knockaunapeebra, a splendid viewpoint both seawards and over the plateau along the scarps that would take me south as the day went on. More moorland led on and vaguely up to the high point of Kilclooney Mountain, in common with so many other ultimate summits it's one of the dullest places in the range.

Now a bit of plateau wandering, northwards to Carrignagower, kind of back towards the trivial lump of Kilclooney Mountain NW Top, and on to a couple of the Coumfea tops (the west top could be added, but I'd already done it and by the time I was embarked on this section the breeze was up and the mist was down, which didn't incentivise hanging around). And a long (seemingly) walk down to Seefin...it's not BAD going, but it's the sort of ground that gives your ankles a good workout if you know what I mean.

A more substantial descent drops to the col under Coumaraglin Mountain and a steady ascent. This hill looks very non-descript during the climb but a gap in the mist up top revealed the yawning coum lying but a few steps east. A knee jarring descent of the far shoulder of this hollow leads down to the woods around the River Tay from where a track led back to the road.

It also leads to the bit that the Captain had cycled down, except I was walking up, the plod back up to the car park being particularly annoying. Those following in my footsteps might be advised to leave the car somewhere down near the river before setting off either way; at least that means you won't be ending the day with a tedious slog on tarmac.
