I have just started working on creating a list of ca. 130 summits over 1500m with a 20m+ prominence in the Massif Central (France), and I have just set myself the challenge of climbing them all before the end of the year. This walk, actually a personal version of the Tour du Sancy, allowed me to take in 11 summits, including the highpoint of the Massif Central, Puy de Sancy (1885m). The initial plan was a full tour of the Massif du Sancy, which included another 7 tops and implied a lot of climbing and a fair extra distance to walk but due to the heat and timing I thought I'd shorten it. I started directly from the Camping de la Grande Cascade, which has a private access to the upper part of a beautiful waterfall, which I passed by on the way back. Note that the higher part of the walk between Puy Ferrand (1854m) and Puy de Sancy was the least enjoyable, with swarms of tourists and... (fortunately harmless) midges !!
The views N from the first summit of the day, Roc de Cuzeau (1737m). Ancient volcanoes rising above wide expanses of grassy fields and forests as far as the eye can see.
Looking down into the wonderful Vallée de Chaudefour, which I visited the next day, from Puy Ferrand (1854m).
Puy de Sancy (1885m) from the W. You can spot the local "midges" in the centre of the pic. Too many people at the top and along the slopes, yet the surroundings are quite spectacular, and the trail continuing along the ridge to the W offers some great walking.
Looking back at Puy de Sancy from Puy de Cliergue (1691m).
La Grande Cascade, above the town of Mont-Dore.

NOTE: ALL information such as Ascent, Length and Creator time taken etc should be regarded as approximate. The creator's comments are opinions and may not be accurate or still correct.
Your time to complete will depend on your speed plus break time and your mode of transport. For walkers: Naismith's rule, an approximate though often inaccurate estimate, suggests a time of 8h 20m + time stopped for breaks
NOTE: It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission.

* Note: A GPS Height in the elevation profile is sourced from the device that recorded the track. An "SRTM" height is derived from a model of elevations for parts of the earth. More detail
