When rain and mist covers the High Mournes, this forest park offers a sheltered and yet interesting alternative. Ascend the Glen River as if climbing Slieve Donard or Comadagh, but turn west at J369 299 and subsequently north-west for the forest park. There are several tracks within the park, but the aim is to meet the Shimna River and follow it downriver to Newcastle. There are a wide variety of trees within the park, and we also encountered a wonderful carpet of bluebells. See the ornate stone bridges, the Barbican Gate, the Hermitage structure and Clanbrassil Barn. Trailmaps are available on several websites including walkni.com. We emerged onto Bryansford Road on the return leg of our trip, but the quieter Tullybrannigan Road is an alternative.

NOTE: ALL information such as Ascent, Length and Creator time taken etc should be regarded as approximate. The creator's comments are opinions and may not be accurate or still correct.
Your time to complete will depend on your speed plus break time and your mode of transport. For walkers: Naismith's rule, a rough and often inaccurate estimate, suggests a time of 3h 33m + time stopped for breaks
NOTE: It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission.
* Note: A GPS Height in the elevation profile is sourced from the device that recorded the track. An "SRTM" height is derived from a model of elevations for parts of the earth. More detail
