What else does one do on a wet and windy day? Get out and enjoy yourself of course. Got the wet gear on and headed out on the hills overlooking Blessington Lakes. It is nice to have the whole mountain to yourself. The visability was erattic at higher levels but when the clouds cleared you were treated to beautiful vistas over the lake to Vallymount and Tulfarris. The ground was surprisingly firm considering the recent amount of rain, except for one patch below the only turf bank, where I sank above my ankle! A quick response and good gaiters saved me from a muddy bootful. Some new carving has appeared along the way as well as a new enhanced description at the monument to the airmen that crashed on Black Hill. Things must have been slack of late since the County Council have renewed the Gap Road surface with a good tarmac topping. Motorists, cyclists and walkers will be happy with the new "non-undulating" surface! As an amusing aside, has anyone spotted the little "Black Sheep of the Family" on the hill to the right just as you leave the exposed part of the Gap Road and reach the first walled bungalow on the way down to Lacken? Would have provided a photo but my phone had just expired.

Your time to complete will depend on your speed plus break time and your mode of transport. For walkers: Naismith's rule, a rough and often inaccurate estimate, suggests a time of 2h 51m + time stopped for breaks
Note: It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission.
