Eirepur: Track 3422 in area near Mizen/Sheeps Head (Ireland)
Three Castles Head / Dunlough Castle
Length: 6.7km, Creator time taken: 2h57m, Ascent: 187m,
Descent: 187m

Places: Start at V73863 26687, end at Start
Logged as completed by 2
Three Casles Head is so called because of a most impressive 15th century defensive fortification with three embedded towers and a (possibly artificial) lake. The 6m high wall appears to be a last ditch defence with the purpose of sheltering its occupants at the end of a headland. It is a most unusual example of a promentory fort.
The walk starts at a small car park and goes through farmland. The farm houses can be seen less than a kilometer west but the path to the headland does not follow the road to the houses, instead being a diagonal accross the large field to the right inside the gate. A voluntary donation of €3 is suggested on a notice at the gate.
A cafe operates at the farm during the summer but it was not open on our visit.

Note: ALL information such as Ascent, Length and Creator time taken etc should be regarded as approximate. The creator's comments are opinions and may not be accurate or still correct.
Your time to complete will depend on your speed plus break time and your mode of transport. For walkers: Naismith's rule, a rough and often inaccurate estimate, suggests a time of 1h 39m + time stopped for breaks
Note: It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission.
