This was a nice hike up mount Gable to the summit of Benlevy. We were extremely lucky with the weather, and escaped the Galway rains to spend a nice day wandering around the forests of Cong. For a bit of a challenge, and to make the most of the sunny spell between the showers, we decided to hike to Benlevy. After a rough slog across the plateau, it was great to find shelter from strong winds and enjoy some lunch with stunning views of Lough Mask and Lough Corrib near the summit. Best to hike this one after a dry spell, or from the south or west sides, as peat hags and wet boggy holes don't always make for a pleasant hike.
Notice the Maamturks, imposing from a distance. The 12 bens can be seen easily on a clear day, and closer you'll see the pleasant shapes of Bohaun, Lugnabrick and Ben Beg. A nice day out in Joyce country!
