Day 05 - Pamplona to Uterga

We left the city and crossed the motorway on the outskirts and headed for the village of Cizur Menor. The path eventually left the main road and climbed through beautiful fields of barley. We passed old farmhouses, aiming towards a big collection of windmills on the horizon. Beyond then we reached the beautiful village of Zariquieghi.
The weather was perfect and the yellow broom was growing in profusion on the hillside. After additionally walking downhill out of the village, the path started to climb quite steeply up towards the large collection of windmills on the top of the hill, called Alto del Pardon. There we found a group of wrought iron sculptures, representing Pilgrims, some of them on foot and some of them on horseback and donkeys. The views from here are spectacular.
Finally we reached the pretty little village of Uterga where we tried the local delicacy called flan, which is approximately like a crème caramel. In these small places the bread van comes into the village, honking its horn loudly. The local bread is delicious, freshly baked and not just a simple white baguette but baked partly with wholemeal flour.
