Route taking in Croaghanirwore and Croaghnageer in the Bluestacks. Parking is at G993849 at the end of the tarmac road where there are a number of spaces.
The track makes use of a handy farm track almost right to the Barnes River before heading off over typical Bluestacks terrain. There are a fair number of river crossings on the route; it has rained a lot lately and there was water running everywhere, meaning the rivers were high and in a couple of cases, tricky to cross.
I had originally hoped to head Southeast towards Croaghconnellagh, but the thought of recrossing the Barnes River, which I had already encountered higher up its course, did not appeal further down. I had visions of descending 350m into the Barnes River Valley and finding myself stuck between cliff and a river I could not cross ... that, and the further 350m ascent to Croaghconnellagh convinced me to head south after Croaghnageer.
Forgot to turn on the gps until I was well up the track; overall stats are 11.5k, 600m ascent and three hours.
And yes, I walked past Croaghagranagh thinking I was walking over Croaghagranagh ... this is becoming a bit of a habit, but one hump is very much like another here - perhaps I can claim a first ascent of pt 441 ... I'll have to put the carns into my gps. Could have been worse though, it could have been over 500m!
