Onzy: Track 2889 in area near Stoompa, Mangerton (Ireland)
An 'inefficient' round of the Stoompas
Length: 11.5km, Creator time taken: 2h41m, Ascent: 490m,
Descent: 616m

Places: Start at V9982083619, Stoompa, Stoompa East Top, end at V9840184839 1.9km NW from Start
Logged as completed by 1

Route taking in the two Stoompa tops from the normal starting point for Mangerton itself; the Tooreencormick battlefield site, V984 849. Though, judging by the starting point indicated on the track itself, my GPS didn't come to life until half way up! It's a three and a half hour trip with an ascent of about 650-700m.

The obvious track beginning from this point is the complete circuit taking in Mangerton, Mangerton N, Glencappul Top and the two Stoompas, but there was an element here of both time constraint and an unwillingness to expend effort climbing the already climbed!

In the knowledge of Captain Vertigo monitoring its 'efficiency', I sorely wanted to begin this walk from the network of roads immediately to the east around W102 841, from where these two hills look much more straightforward, but after ten minutes running up and down lanes I did not see anywhere I was happy to approach the hills from. There is plenty of parking though, Captain, for when you come to look! A route from that direction would be a definite improvement to this track, as it would potentially outflank a lot of boggy ground.

The walk itself covers that same boggy ground north of Lough Garagarry before reaching the northern spur of Stoompa. In an effort not to repeat this I tracked further north on the return, finding firmer, though rougher and not exactly dry, ground, but losing some height I had to regain in the process. There are also two awkward river crossings and a wet descent from the col between the two hills..

NOTE: ALL information such as Ascent, Length and Creator time taken etc should be regarded as approximate. The creator's comments are opinions and may not be accurate or still correct.
Your time to complete will depend on your speed plus break time and your mode of transport. For walkers: Naismith's rule, an approximate though often inaccurate estimate, suggests a time of 3h 7m + time stopped for breaks
NOTE: It is up to you to ensure that your route is appropriate for you and your party to follow bearing in mind all factors such as safety, weather conditions, experience and access permission.

* Note: A GPS Height in the elevation profile is sourced from the device that recorded the track. An "SRTM" height is derived from a model of elevations for parts of the earth. More detail
