PMG Walk 77 - Ox Mountains. Day 19 in the hills! I have been on the go now for nearly 3 weeks. One of the hardest things I have always found on trips to the mountains or away climbing is getting the nutrition right! With the long days in the hills and the battling of the weather I guess I have not been eating enough. I always look at food as fuel and in terms of sports I eat anything, but of course this doesn't mean I am always eating the right food or the best food for these activities. So I awoke in the middle of the night starved and starting eat odds and ends from my food box. Sometimes hunger (for me at least) is not felt over tiredness, and I think last night was one of those times. So after a midnight snack/meal I was finally able to sleep last night This morning the forecast was correct and the clouds were down. The rain was on it's way but the morning was suppose to be the best time for me to get out into the hills. I was in the Ox mountains and I just had 2 summits to reach in these mountains. My planned route would take me up a long mountain road to Lough Easky and then along 3 summits (2 PMG summits and 1 non-PMG summit) and then back down to windmill roads/tracks and mountain road back to the car. Luckily for me it would be just a 24.5km of walking. However, as I lay there snug in my sleeping bag and with the alarm going off at 7am, I said; "Sod it, It looks positively crap outside", and I went back to sleep with no intention of getting into the hills today. Then at 8am one of those moments of motivation and will happened. I was changing my mind and It Was Going To Happen! It was one of those moments that nothing else mattered, every fibre of me was willing and saying get into the hills! Leaving the warm sleeping bag, putting on damp hiking trousers and damp boots didn't bother me. Eating the same breakfast and going through the same morning routine with one task in mind; get walking. I love those moments of will and motivation. I sometimes wonder where they come from and where they go. After the walk and when I arrived back to the car the rain really started to get going but the walk was done and I was happy to have not wasted the day. Sadly even with the rain gear on I did get slightly wet. Again I blame the wind for driving the rain at me for at least 3 hours in the hills...this always seems to result in getting wet in the end! Visibility was terrible, underfoot conditions were, you guessed it, terrible too. I felt like I was climbing up and down peat hags half the time but the summits were reached and then I got off the hills fast! These hills here seem rather spread out and the 2 or 3 summit days are getting old fast...it makes me feel like I am getting nowhere fast but the count is 72 summits to go! Let's hope for better weather for the days to come and as I sit here in the Park Hotel in Sligo drinking tea, looking out the window at the dull grey skies, I wonder will I get some more good weather tomorrow. I guess I must stay positive!
